About the Project

Enhancing Landscape Mode for an Medical App

This project involved redesigning the landscape mode of a medical app that connects remote and emergency physicians to support proper diagnosis and decision making in hyperacute settings. Initially, the app was optimized for use in portrait orientation, but faced challenges when used in landscape mode, especially on iPads installed in hospitals.

Challenges

01

The call recipient selection panel was hidden in landscape mode, requiring users to switch to portrait mode, which caused inconvenience during critical moments.

02

The existing layout did not support seamless operation across both portrait and landscape modes, compromising the user experience.

Design Process

Proposal from Engineers

  • Prefer a fully hidden state over one that’s partially visible.

  • While the device is often used in portrait mode, there are situations, such as when it is mounted on a stand, where it would be helpful to have support for landscape mode as well.

Design Considerations

  • Make sure the user experience is seamless and consistent in both portrait and landscape modes, with no hiccups in operation.
  • Design the layout so that key UI elements, like the call recipient selection panel, are always visible, especially with emergency medical use in mind.

  • Focus on building an intuitive UI that allows for quick and easy interactions, helping reduce cognitive load for doctors in high-pressure situations.

Design

Creation of Figma Components

Previously, there was no involvement of a designer, which resulted in the absence of a design system and components. To ensure consistency across the platform for future expansions and updates, I built a comprehensive design system in Figma.

Reflections and Learnings

Based on feedback from healthcare professionals, I implemented improvements expected to significantly enhance the app’s usability in real-world medical settings. By seamlessly integrating landscape and portrait modes, the design aimed to boost efficiency and enable quick access to critical features during emergencies. Since initial proposals were already provided, I omitted wireframes to streamline the design process and respond promptly. This experience highlighted the importance of cross-departmental collaboration and adaptability. I am confident that these enhancements, once released, will deliver substantial benefits to users.
